Olympic doctor confronted for sexual abuse
January 22, 2018
Accusations of sexual abuse have been piling up for a long time, and finally the truth is coming out in the Larry Nassar scandal.
Nassar, a former Michigan State and U.S. Olympic doctor, was charged with sexual abuse to several of his athletes that came to him for help. Public accusations have been made since September of 2016, and the victims number in the hundreds.
Many famous athletes such as Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, and McKayla Maroney have claimed they were sexually assaulted by Nassar. Kyle Stephens, a family friend of Nassar, has been one of the most vocal to speak out against him. Over 150 women told a Michigan courtroom of the sexual abuse suffered at the hands of Nassar.
Stephens first reported these incidents when she was 12 to her family, but they did not believe her. Nassar tricked Stephens’s family to believe she was lying until they realized she was not. Her father committed suicide in 2016, and Stephens thinks he did that because of the shame her father faced after realizing she was not lying.
Nassar pleaded guilty for many cases and was previously sentenced to 60 years in prison for child pornography charges.
