Gymnastics team starts 7-0 and grabs county title along the way
November 13, 2015
Some sports teams would define a successful season as a year filled with fun and growth, and some teams find winning to be the most important aspect, but for Hillsborough gymnastics, they have been able to accomplish both. This year’s gymnastics team has found a way to win consistently, while doing it in style.
The team has not lost this season, boasting a 7-0 record. They have been able to continue their winning ways, building off last years 7-2 record. The team has won the Raider Invitational and the Somerset County title this year. The will also attempt to defend their Skyland Conference and Central II sectional titles from last year.
The team has added plenty of depth this year, with six new freshmen, but they have returned many important girls, including all state gymnast Sarah Pallay and senior Natalie Onderko who has fully returned from injury.
The depth of the team has been a huge benefit.
“We have had the luxury of so much depth that we have remained fairly consistent this season,” head coach Elizabeth Murrin said. “We are able to get everyone rest days and to rotate our talent. We also have a really positive team vibe and energy, so each member of the team is there to support one another.”
Team chemistry has been another key to the team’s success.
“It’s been a really great start to the season and we have high hopes for the future,” Pallay said. “I couldn’t spend my senior year competing with a better group of girls. The team has been glued together by great leadership, especially amongst the seniors.”
Sophomore Stella Pashaian also thinks the leadership from the elder gymnasts has paid significant dividends.
“The seniors pick up the team,” Pashaian said. “They are great leaders and keep the team together.”
Despite all of the success, the team still ultimately wants to make having fun the most important goal this season. Depth, chemistry, and overall skill has helped launch the team to a great season so far and there is much more to come in November for Boro gymnastics.
