On Jan. 28 the Grammys were held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event brought together music stars from across the country in celebration of their music accomplishments over the year. Among the many awards given out was “Best Pop Solo Performance” that was awarded to the beloved Ed Sheeran. Immediately after, however, the public was in a complete uproar.

The song Sheeran was nominated for was “Shape of You” from his album Divide. The message in Sheeran’s pop song was rooted in the physical attraction to a woman’s body, and while the woman remains unknown, the song was highly sensual.

The other nominees were “Praying” by Kesha, “Million Reasons” by Lady Gaga, “Love So Soft” by Kelly Clarkson, and “What About Us” by P!nk.

Compared to the other nominated songs, “Shape of You” is trivial and light, as opposed to the topics of other songs that cover sexual assault and other more serious topics.

Kesha’s “Praying” for example was crafted out of her experience of being raped and her journey in overcoming her traumatic experience. The themes of overcoming a relationship and sexual and emotional abuse in the eyes of many were more deserving of the win than Sheeran’s ode to the female body.

Twitter, out of all social media outlets, was in the most uproar with celebrities defending Kesha and attacking the Grammys. The #MeToo movement contributed significantly to the controversy that arose and many celebrities commented on his win.

Sheeran was not in attendance at the Grammys to accept the award in person yet he was sure to face the disappointment over social media.

The emotion filled tweets have subsided over the past few days, but the shock waves can still be felt.
