“A Quiet Place” scares audiences everywhere
April 13, 2018
With Friday the 13th here today, many horror movies are hitting theaters, including A Quiet Place. John Krasinski both directed and stars in the film as Lee Abbott, accompanied by his real life wife, Emily Blunt, who plays his onscreen wife, Evelyn Abbott. Their children are played by Millicent Simmonds, who is Regan Abbott, their deaf daughter, and Noah Jupe plays their son, Marcus Abbott. Simmonds is deaf in real life, which plays to her advantage in the film as all of her dialogue is sign language.
The film centers around the Abbott family fighting for survival in post apocalyptic New York as unearthly creatures (similar in nature to the demogorgon from the hit TV show Stranger Things) have taken over, and begun to hunt all living things. The creatures are blind, hunting solely off of any sounds made. A Quiet Place shows the lengths this family will go in order to try to live a normal life while adapting to their surroundings, trying to make as little noise as possible.
With that being said, A Quiet Place is a film worth seeing. What got me most interested in the film was the fact that the majority of it was in sign language, which is not something you encounter every day with movies. It is impressive to see the actors having to act solely with their mannerisms as they were unable to use their voices to express their emotions. The use of sign language also tests the audience as they have to pay more attention to the film in order to understand what is going on due to the lack of dialogue, and the requirement of reading subtitles.
For someone who is not a big fan of horror films, I thought very highly of A Quiet Place. What made this movie scary was the fact that it played on the audiences’ stress and anxieties, making it more scary than any horror film that relies on gore could ever be. Additionally, one unexpected element of the film was how touching it is. A Quiet Place is not just a typical horror movie as it shows a family’s bond, and how it both struggles and grows stronger in trying times; this moved me to tears.
A Quiet Place is a revolutionary horror film that does a great job of scaring people senseless, while also stepping out of the box by having the majority of the dialogue be in sign language. Audiences everywhere should see this movie in support of its creativity and genius.
