Hillsborough softball opens campaign with a statement win
April 11, 2018
With their regular season opener getting cancelled on April 3, the softball team was left waiting to start the season. Instead, they opened up the season with a match against East Brunswick. They won the game with ease, beating the Bears 16-1.
The game was close after the first inning with Hillsborough up 3-1, but in the second the Raiders piled on seven runs. After the first, East Brunswick remained scoreless.
The team recorded 21 hits with eight of the players each having at least one. Among those 21 hits, junior Karlie Manco hit one home run, while senior Kelsey Galevich hit a pair.
“It feels great to hit home runs, and even better to hit two in the same game,” Galevich said. “My team had my back and I think their support had a huge impact on the hits and how we all worked together in the game.”
The defense held their own as well only allowing one run the entire game. Sophomore Courtney Wengryn pitched five innings and recorded seven strikeouts. She was consistent the whole game only allowing four hits.
The Lady Raiders will continue their schedule with back-to-back games this week in Delaware Valley and Bridgewater-Raritan.
