The boys volleyball team is off to an impressive start. They look to build on an outstanding 2017 season when the team made it all the way to the state semi final where they fell short in the third set.

However, the loss is not at all demoralizing as many of the key players on last year’s team are returning to the squad this year. Leading the strong group are seniors Logan Conway, Vivek Mantha, Marcus Urrutia, and Danny Duffek who will be instrumental to the team’s success this season.

This year, the team is 5-2. They easily defeated Watchung Hills, North Burlington, Ridge, East Brunswick, and St. Joes. Their only losses were to Southern and Bridgewater who are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the state, respectively. Hillsborough is not far behind as they currently occupy the No. 4 ranking.

One to watch is Mantha, who is on the verge of getting 500 varsity career kills. When talking about his expectations for the team, Mantha puts his hand above his head.

“The bar is up here,” Mantha said. “We expect to put a number up on a banner and be remembered. We want kids to look up and see a true example of what real fundamental volleyball players are like.”

Head coach Todd Sudol is very familiar with success. He has coached many strong volleyball teams in the past and also has many state titles as coach of the varsity swim team.

For this team, it’s all about the chemistry. It’s truly a group of athletes who are playing for each other and playing for a common goal.

“I think our season will be very successful,” senior Kevin Cole said. “We have an experienced group of kids with a strong bond and a great coach. Our hard work in the off season has definitely prepared us for the road that lies ahead.”
