Lack of choice in gym creates lack of interest

The gym now feels like a place void of fun and opportunity.

It is now the second year that students are not allowed to choose their gym classes and no one is a fan. Prior, students were allowed to pick what kind of physical education class they wished to be in and choose what fits best. However, there have been many complaints since then.

Now that students are just put into random gym classes, they don’t get any say in taking a class of interest. Lately, if students are forced into classes they don’t want to be in, it can lead to phone use, lack of attention, and low participation. Some choices such as team games, football, weight room, and dancing are not what the majority of the student body desire to take.

Getting put into a gym class that a student really dislikes is going to make them dislike physical education when it is supposed to be fun and teach healthy living habits.

For example, a girl may not want to play football and be around competitive boys but may wish to do yoga which would benefit her now and into her future.

If students can choose their own class, it would result in better participation in gym. Greater participation would increase grades and effectively promote better health.

“I’m not as athletic as other people and I don’t want to be forced to play soccer, when I could choose to take something else,” junior Kylie Laverty said.

When schools allow students to choose their gym classes, physical education is guaranteed to be more enjoyable for the students as well as the teachers. The gym teachers would get to teach what they wanted to students who actually wanted to take their class.

Now, lots of students dislike going to gym, when it should be a good time. If students are able to choose their own gym classes, the physical education department would be made more enjoyable and ultimately more successful at promoting a healthy lifestyle for years to come.
