Going into the Somerset County Tournament, HHS gymnastics, freshly ranked No. 8 in the state, knew they had to handle business. With a strong team effort, the team was able to do just that.

Behind an individual all-around win from junior Sam Ringel, the squad captured its fifth straight county title with a score of 105.200, defeating the likes of Bridgewater, Ridge, and Montgomery.

While several girls contributed to the win, Ringel was once again the leader for HHS’s winning performance. She won two individual events, taking top prize in vault with a score of 9.35 and beam with a score of 9.45.

In addition to her first place finishes, Ringel also took second place on uneven bars with a score of 9.3, and floor, achieving a 9.35. Her mastery across every single event culminated in Ringel amassing the highest all-around score, winning top honors with a total score of 37.45.

“I went into county’s with more of a positive attitude than last year,” Ringel said. “I was excited to improve whether it was scoring higher or just doing my routines a little bit better.

Several other members of the squad also placed highly to help the team ascend the podium to victory. Junior Jordyn Bell placed third on both uneven bars and beam, with scores of 9.15 and 9.075, respectively. Fellow junior Haley Mandell also nabbed third place in the vault event, with a score of 9.15.

Several other gymnasts turned in strong individual showings. Senior Carolyn Maslanka captured second all-around with a score of 36.150 to lead Montgomery to a fourth place finish. Meanwhile, Bridgewater sophomore Madelyn Baxter earned third all-around to help her team finish in second.

Following their strong county tournament performance, the Boro gymnastic team maintains its undefeated season. The squad hopes to continue this momentum as they start their run into the upcoming state tournament.
