Habitats For Humanity Club Rebuilds Its Fundraising Approach
October 25, 2018
After an unsuccessful last year, the Hillsborough Habitats for Humanity Club is making big strides towards their new goal.
“We want to be able to go on a build this year,” club president Adrianna Yaccarino says.
With the arrival of Manville’s Habitats for Humanity business, the Hillsborough club, co-run by president Adrianna Yaccarino, vice president Alexandra Mure, secretary Maryrose Angelo, and treasurer Caleigh Groff, found itself with many more members than usual. The club’s major goal is not in-contact with the business, but has a noble goal of its own: to raise enough money to go on a “build”, which would allow Hillsborough students to help construct houses for the less fortunate citizens of New Jersey, or, depending on the amount raised, possibly even farther.
With the start of the new year, the club has already received the sponsorship of over thirty businesses across Hillsborough, and plans to host various events through the school, such as movie nights and restaurant-sponsored dinners.
What many fundraisers do not realize, however, is how competitive finding avenues for fundraising is among the many clubs and activities at Hillsborough. Between football, band activities and other school-sponsored activities, the privately-run club has to do its own work to get ahead… a requirement which, Yaccarino is willing to admit, doesn’t always get fulfilled.
“Last year we didn’t get enough money to go on the trip,” Yaccarino says. “And we can’t have bake sales this year, either, because there’s too many clubs already doing that.”
With the aid of advisor X X, Yaccarino has been forced to get creative to keep the build afloat. The club has decided to go with a somewhat unconventional time schedule, with meetings both in the early morning and at the regular 2:30 time. “It’s to make sure people can attend regardless of schedule,” Yaccarino says, referring specifically to the many sports players who have expressed interest in the club.
