With temperatures recently dropping to the negatives, January in Hillsborough has seen its coldest days of the winter season. With February here, the speculated mid 30s temperature makes for the perfect weather to snuggle up indoors and binge a Netflix show. Netflix is offering a potent prescription for the midwinter blues in the form of a grand listing of new, original streaming options for subscribers this February.

Here are the shows and movies I am most excited for this month.

Russian Doll, starring Natasha Lyonne as the main character, Nadia, was released on Feb. 1, 2019. Nadia is a New York software designer, and on the night of her 36th birthday, she is killed in a car accident. Horrifyingly, she finds herself waking up to the same day of her death. The sequence of events repeats as Nadia finds herself in a never-ending cycle of inevitable death. Eight episodes of this dark comedy have already been released on Netflix.

Director Dan Gilroy and actor Jake Gyllenhaal collaborated to produce Velvet Buzzsaw, a rated R horror movie. Also released on Feb. 1, Velvet Buzzsaw takes place in the ironically colorless world of Los Angeles where the masterpieces of a deranged man who have recently passed away are exploited for fame and fortune. Upon the success of the paintings of the unidentified artist, those involved in the act of using his artwork for fame start dying one by one.

The Umbrella Academy is a comic book adaptation set to be released on Feb. 15. When forty-three infants are unexpectedly born to women who’ve shown no signs of pregnancy, seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist. At the Umbrella Academy, the children, who all have vastly different personalities and possess supernatural powers are prepared to save the world.
