Jonas Brothers make successful comeback with song “Sucker”
March 13, 2019
Oct. 29, 2013, was a sad day in the history of boy bands and for young girls everywhere as this was the day that the Jonas Brothers announced that they were splitting up. In the six years since, the brothers have traveled their own paths. Nick Jonas began a successful solo career, releasing hit songs like “Jealous” and “Chains”. Joe Jonas became the frontman of a new band called DNCE, which released hit songs like “Cake By The Ocean” and “Toothbrush”. Unlike his brothers, Kevin Jonas took a break from music, taking time to be with his family and raising his two young daughters Alena and Valentina.
Over the past six years, Nick and Joe have found women to spend the rest of their lives with. Nick married Bollywood turned Hollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, most famous for her roles in Baywatch and Quantico. Although they are not yet married, Joe Jonas recently popped the question to Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner, widely known for her portrayal of Sansa Stark, and they are looking to get married this summer.
Within the past year, the Jonas Brothers have been filming a documentary about their lives before, during, and after the band, focusing mainly on where they are now. Cameras followed the brothers into therapy, documenting them talking through what split up the band in 2013. In the midst of filming, the brothers played music together for the first time in six years, bringing back the magic they felt in their prime.
Fast forward to Mar. 1, 2019, the Jonas Brothers released their first song and music video in six years titled, “Sucker”. “Sucker” is a happy pop-rock tune about all of the women in the boys’ lives. Through lyrics like, “I’m a sucker for you / Say the word and I’ll go anywhere blindly,” it is clear how in love the boys are with their women, and they are not afraid to show it. The song itself differs only slightly from the band’s sound back in the day, but it feels like a natural progression, their sound aging with them.
The themes of the song are further shown through the vibrant music video. The music video was filmed at a castle in England, giving off an Alice in Wonderland vibe as the band and their women are decked out in eclectic clothing and having a tea party. What stuck out most to me in the video was how natural all of the interactions between each brother and their woman was, giving us a glimpse into their daily relationship dynamic.
Being a huge Jonas Brothers fan since 2006, I am extremely excited about their reunion. To be honest, I was not thrilled with the song upon the first listen as I loved the old Jonas Brothers sound. After watching the music video and listening to the song further, “Sucker” is a song that I see myself dancing and singing along to for a long time to come. With that being said, the Jonas Brothers made a statement with “Sucker” that they are back and here to stay, and I for one am excited for what is to come.
