On Apr. 5, the K-pop girl group BLACKPINK released their new EP titled Kill This Love. After weeks of teasing fans on Instagram, members Rose, Jennie, Lisa, and Jisoo dropped four new songs, a remix version of “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du,” and a record-breaking music video.

To those unfamiliar, BLACKPINK is a South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment. The band debuted on Aug. 8, 2016 with their single album Square One; with much success, their popular single “Boombayah,” kicked off the band’s career by coming in at number one on the Billboard charts. BLACKPINK’s last released an album in 2018, titled Blackpink in Your Area; this features remixes of existing songs and new sounds.

The highly anticipated comeback made YouTube history days after its release. In 2013, “Gentlemen,” by PSY became an overnight sensation, reaching 100 million views in 2.8 days. In 2018, K-pop boy band BTS’s “IDOL” achieved 100 million views in four days, twenty-three hours. “Kill This Love” broke both records by hitting the benchmark within two days and fourteen hours.

On top of that, BLACKPINK became the first girl group in fifteen years to reach number one on US iTunes.

The futuristic music video of ‘Kill This Love,” deviates from the band’s sweet and innocent tone of the past few EPs. BLACKPINK switches it up this time with electric beats and fast rhythm. Ditching sentimental for triumphant, the members nailed the vibe with their powerful and killer voices.

Currently, concert tickets to see Rose, Jennie, Lisa, and Jisoo live are selling fast.

BLACKPINK announced their 2019 World Tour [In Your Area] in early February, kicking off their tour in Bangkok. The band’s US tour dates will include stops in Atlanta, Newark, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Forth Worth. BLACKPINK will also be making a special appearance at Coachella on Apr. 12, making them the first K-pop band to breeze the stage.

Congratulations to BLACKPINK for all their accomplishments.
