Captain Marvel, one of Marvel’s most anticipated films of 2019, recently hit theaters a few weeks ago. This film achieved record status by becoming the first female-led superhero movie to break the $1 billion-barrier in the box office. Not only is Captain Marvel breaking down barriers in the box office, but it is also making Marvel history as Captain Marvel is the first Marvel film with a woman protagonist.

In this movie, Captain Marvel, also known as Carol Danvers, lives on a planet by the name of Kree. She has lost the last six years of her memory and when she is stranded on Earth, she discovers her past and ends the war between her planet and the Skrulls planet; she does so through the assistance of Nick Fury and the rest of the Marvel universe. Furthermore, the film provides a further backstory on the origin on the name “Avengers” and for a beloved recurring character Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, who often provided much needed comedic relief.

With DC having released Wonder Woman two years ago, Marvel felt pressure to keep up with the times if they wished to strengthen their audience. Though the franchise is mostly led by male protagonists like Thor, the Hulk, etc., this film featured women in major roles. These women included Brie Larson as Carol Danvers and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, Carol’s best friend. These two are joining Marvel’s growing list of female characters that already includes Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, and many more.

The suspense building up to Captain Marvel is in part due to the excitement for the upcoming Avengers film set to release April 26 titled Avengers: Endgame. Captain Marvel is part of a new age of Marvel superheroes that will carry on the Marvel legacy for many if not all of the longlasting characters that will no longer be a part of the series.

Since major actors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and Mark Ruffalo’s contracts have come to a close, the Marvel fanbase is left wondering what will become of the series. After seeing Captain Marvel, fans can rest assured knowing that the legacy will be left in good hands.
