June 7, 2019
The Rutgers University 253rd Commencement ceremony took place on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at HighPoint.com Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. An estimated 13,473 graduates received degrees this year from Rutgers University–New Brunswick and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. The day was hectic and busy, however, it was truly special as the commencement address was inspirational and eye opening.
The 2019 co-commencement address speakers were Rutgers alumni Devin McCourty and Jason McCourty. The twin brothers played football for the university and went on to become successful NFL players. Recently, the two brothers won the 2019 Super Bowl with the New England Patriots making them the first set of twins to win Super Bowl rings.
Despite football being a major part of both the twins’ lives, they did not let that define them as they spoke of their ambitions and plans to help others through their various charity events. The brothers have seen first hand the devastating effects of Sickle Cell on family members and they are choosing to use their platform to help families in similar situations. The twins sought to partner with a non-profit that supports children and families battling Sickle Cell and were thrilled to find Embrace Kids Foundation.
In addition to reflecting on their own successes, the two told the Class of 2019 they will face roadblocks, speed bumps and every obstacle possible, but advised them to confront these challenges head-on and not let moments of self-doubt and fear interfere with their drive to be great.
Overall, the McCourty brothers delivered a well spoken commencement address with a powerful and inspiring message. The audience was able to see how the twins used their hardships as motivation to succeed and power through to achieve their aspirations.
