With all the hype surrounding it, NBA 2K20 has a lot to live up to. There have been countless innovative classics like 2K10, with the addition of MyCareer, and 2K11 with the Jordan challenge. However, besides an improved MyCareer and the addition of the WNBA, NBA 2K20 is repetitive and boring. To put it bluntly, NBA 2K20 is just another 2K game.

MyCareer

The best part about MyCareer is the storyline. After an underwhelming 2K19 tale and a terrible Spike Lee “joint” in 2K16, this career path doesn’t make the player want to skip through all the cutscenes. The story seems sincere and authentic, and does a solid job of portraying how the player can make an impact off of the court.

WNBA

Another positive was the addition of the WNBA. This was something that was long overdue, as the WNBA gives 2K players more options to choose from, and adds another dynamic to the game.

Where 2K20 Goes Wrong

MyTeam, a card-collecting fantasy mode, is too similar to last year’s game. There is nothing original that makes you want to keep playing it. The same goes for MyGM and MyLeague.

The three main game modes are riddled with microtransactions, a payment of real money for 2K’s virtual currency. Getting loot boxes (which used to be free in previous 2Ks) requires hours on hours spent on the game or a payment of real money. This gives 2K a corporate feel rather than a game that’s focused on appealing to the fans.

“This years 2k is the same game as last year,” senior Massimo Sasso said. “They added nothing new and it feels bland. All in all I give it 2/5 stars.”

Conclusion

Overall, 2K20 doesn’t give fans anything to be excited about, and Sasso seems to hold the general consensus among fans. Besides updated rosters and the WNBA, you can get the same exact experience from 2K19. While it has a very popular culture around it and won’t likely die soon, repeating the recipe for 2K20 in future games won’t make fans happy.
